Hanover Defeats Bayern
November 9, 2006The defeat was made even more painful as their main rivals Schalke 04, Werder Bremen and VfB Stuttgart all won their mid-week games.
In Munich, Szabolcs Huszti scored the only goal of the game two minutes from the break after Bayern's Argentine defender Martin Demichelis lost the ball near the corner flag.
Jiri Stajner played the ball across the area to Huszti and the Hungarian gave Oliver Kahn no chance with a well-taken goal.
The defeat sees Bayern, who have 17 points, fall back to fourth in the table -- six points behind Werder Bremen, while Hanover move from bottom of the table to 15th.
Changes needed for Bayern
"If you do not move and do not try, then you should not be surprised to lose a match like this," Bayern defender Daniel van Buyten said. "It is not working this way. Something needs to change."
Bayern's Dutch striker Mark van Bommel said: "Now we need a good run."
Hanover's coach, Dieter Hecking, who saw his side achieve only their second season victory, said he was very happy.
"We showed another Hanover in the game. An excellent team effort was rewarded."
His Bayern counterpart, Felix Magath, said his team did too little in the first half.
"We made a major mistake in the first half and that cost us. In the second half we played better, but could not create the chances we needed. We struggle against well-structured defences."
Winning results for Schalke and Stuttgart
Troubled Schalke, where infighting has again grabbed most of the recent headlines, put all of that aside with a convincing 2-0 victory at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Ze Antonio opened the scoring for the visitors with an own goal in the 11th minute before Gustavo Varela added a second on the half hour.
The victory for Schalke sees them move to third in the table with 20 points, three behind Werder Bremen, who won 2-1 at Nuremberg on Tuesday.
VfB Stuttgart, who on Tuesday beat SV Hamburg 2-0, are second with 21 points.
Hertha moves up
Hertha Berlin moved past Bayern with a 2-2 draw at Arminia Bielefeld. Bielefeld took the lead in the 28th minute through South African international Sibusiso Zuma, who curled the ball into the Berlin goal after his marker had stopped playing expecting an offside decision.
Gilberto equalized on the stroke of half time and Christian Giminez added a second on the hour. Radim Kucera gave Bielefeld a deserved share of the spoils with a well-taken goal in the 76th minute.
The side from the capital has 17 points for fourth place.
In other matches on Wednesday a 10-man Bayer Leverkusen won 3-1 at VfL Bochum, with goals by Sergej Barbarez, Andrey Voronin and Tranquillo Barnetta.
Former German international Paul Freier was sent off for a second bookable offence in the second half after Ivo Ilicevic had pulled one back for Bochum.
Japanese international Naohiro Takahara gave Eintracht Frankfurt a 1-0 victory at Energie Cottbus.
On Tuesday, Borussia Dortmund played to a goalless draw with Alemannia Aachen and Mainz 05 lost 2-1 at home against VfL Wolfsburg.
