Bayern seal Bundesliga title at Wolfsburg

Given their first chance to secure the league title, Bayern emphatically seized it in Saturday's evening fixture. 

Once Leipzig failed to beat Ingolstadt earlier on Saturday, it was clear that three points would suffice to secure a fifth league title in five seasons for the imperious Bavarians. 

Some of the club's key water carriers this season got on the score sheet. Robert Lewandowski bagged a brace, David Alaba fired home a free kick to get the goals flowing, Arjen Robben pulled out a party piece from range and Thomas Müller was in the right place at the right time to hoover up a goal when Lewandowski could only hit the woodwork. 

"It does not always go without saying that we can simply waltz to victory in the Bundesliga," captain Philipp Lahm said after on Sky television after the game, flying somewhat in the face of recent statistical evidence. Lahm is retiring at the end of the season, and claimed his eighth Bundesliga title on Saturday. Confronted with his stats, Lahm sought to be modest, saying the six career league goals he scored was a figure "that could be built upon." Asked about his win record and haul of titles, he then conceded that these numbers were "decent."

'Just' one Bayern trophy

The title will be the only major piece of silverware Bayern claim this season, after Wednesday's defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the German Cup semifinal. In the Champions League quarterfinals, meanwhile, coach Carlo Ancelotti's troupe met their end against Ancelotti's former employers Real Madrid. 

There are still three more weekends of action in the Bundesliga season, but the win stretches Bayern's lead to an unassailable 10 points against second-placed Leipzig.

Bayern also continued an odd tradition ever since moving to the Allianz Arena stadium in 2005. The Bavarians are yet to seal a championship at their new home ground. It's the third time, after 2003 and 2008, that they wrapped up the title in Wolfsburg's Volkswagen Arena.

Bayern Munich have won 27 German titles in the club's history, 26 of those in the Bundesliga era. Bayern are just one shy of a 50 percent hit-rate in Bundesliga's 54-season history, winning almost every other year.
