Cannes Celebrates 61
The 61st Annual Cannes Film Festival
The Cannes Film Festival, which opens in the southern French city on May 14, 2008, and runs for two weeks, is in its 61st year. In 1939, France's minister for public instruction and the arts, Jean Zay, proposed holding an international film festival, but his plans were delayed by World War II and couldn't be realized until 1946. With the exception of 1948 and 1950, when the festival had to be cancelled due to lack of funds, it has taken place every year since its founding. Today, the festival is one of the most significant in the film industry and, with over 4,000 journalists attending, one of the branch's most well covered annual events. This year's official poster by Pierre Collier is inspired by a photograph by US film director David Lynch. Click below for a glimpse of the six decades of Cannes.
