Later this afternoon, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is due to host an unprecedented meeting with the Dalai Lama at the Chancellery here in Berlin. The meeting has raised tensions with China, which regards the Dalai Lama as a separatist leader. Beijing has cancelled talks scheduled for later Sunday in Munich between business leaders, ostensibly for technical reasons.
