European Union lawmakers have agreed to toughen the guide lines for imprisoning illegal immigrants. Under the new rules, undocumented workers can be imprisoned for up to 18 months and face a re-entry ban of up to five years. Lawmakers in the European Parliament backed the new migration law by a large majority today - confirming an earlier deal by EU Interior Ministers. According to immigration officials - of the about 10 million illegal immigrants in the Union - some 200-thousand were arrested this year and 90,000 were expelled.
