French President Nicolas Sarkozy has arrived in Afghanistan - after ten French soldiers were killed in a clash with Taliban insurgents on Tuesday. After a brief meeting with French soldiers at a base in Kabul the French President was welcomed by his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai in the presidential palace. Sarkozy said it was essential that French troops remain in Afghanistan. The fighting that claimed the French soldiers' lives was the dealiest the country has been involved in since it arrived in Afghanistan in 2002.
