Fränkische Schweiz
October 18, 2012If you love the call of the wild, rent a canoe or kayak. The Wiesent River is the only waterway you can take through the Fränkische Schweiz. To protect the kingfisher and other fauna, the tributaries have been declared off-limits.
Things start getting exciting at Sachsenmühle. After a plunge over a two-and-a-half-meter weir you can take a break in a beer garden before exploring the spectacular Binghöhle, Germany's largest stalactite cave. Formed millions of years ago, it leads with few side corridors through the mountain.
Geologically, the Fränkische Schweiz is a typical karst region with acid-soluble stone and has two or three thousand caves. But the region's picturesque rock formations also make it the ideal destination for both beginning and professional rock climbers.
