German Cup: Osnabrück stun Hamburg
August 13, 2017Osnabrück 3-1 Hamburg
(Savran 39', Heider 62', Arslan 71' – Wood pen 75')
Ten-man Osnabrück produced the first shock of the German Cup, condemning Hamburg to a humiliating first round exit.
Third tier Osnabrück had to play with a man short from the 18th minute, when last man Marcel Appiah was shown a straight red card for a foul on Bobby Wood.
Any hopes Hamburg had of that making their afternoon an easy one were extinguished when Halil Savran gave the hosts the lead six minutes before the break.
Marc Heider doubled their lead just after the hour and Ahmed Arslan made it three, sending the home fans into dreamland, despite a late consolation by Wood from the penalty spot.
Sportfreunde Dorfmerkingen 0-5 RB Leipzig
(Sabitzer 4', 47', Werner 56', Poulsen pen 59', Keita 65')
Marcel Sabitzer struck twice as Leipzig crushed lowly Sportfreunde Dorfmerkingen 5-0 in the first round of the German Cup.
Sabitzer needed just four minutes to make the breakthrough, but Sportfreunde Dorfmerkingen held firm until the break, restricting the Bundesliga chances to a narrow halftime lead.
But Sabitzer added a second two minutes after the break, and that opened the floodgates. Timo Werner made it 3-0 and Yusuf Poulsen added a fourth from the penalty spot.
Naby Keita put the finishing touches on the win with a fifth.
