Angelique Kerber wins US Open
September 11, 2016German tennis star Angelique Kerber on Saturday beat Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to win the US Open in New York City.
The 28-year-old from Bremen claimed the opening set, grabbing an early lead with only three unforced errors in the opener.
"It's just amazing. I won my second Grand Slam of the year and it's the best year of my career. For me, everything started here in 2011 and here, five years later, I'm standing with the trophy," she said.
"First of all, congrats to Karolina. You had an amazing two weeks. You have an amazing future. I think we showed an amazing final," she added. "All the dreams came true this year."
First US Open title
Kerber's victory marks her first US Open title and second Grand Slam trophy of her breakthrough season. She is the first German woman to win the US Open since Steffi Graf in 1996.
She won her first major in January at the Australian Open.
Kerber replaces American powerhouse Serena Williams, who held the top position in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) for three-and-a-half years with a 210-21 record.
On Sunday, Serbia's Novak Djokovic will face off against Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland in the men's singles final.
