Hamburg win Bundesliga matchday 30

Hamburg 3-2 Augsburg

Having scored more goals in the opening 20 minutes against Augsburg than in their previous eight games combined, everyone, perhaps even Hamburg themselves, couldn't believe what was happening. Zoltan Stieber's shot deflected off teammate Ivica Olic to give Hamburg the lead, but the surprise nearly reached new heights when Pierre-Michel Lasogga headed in unmarked eight minutes later. Raul Bobadilla headed in at the other end to restore some normality, but there was no escaping the fact Hamburg was playing well.

That continued in the second half, until a furious 33 seconds changed it all. Tobias Werner squeezed a cute shot in at the near post to swiftly and ruthlessly draw Augsburg level, despite Bruno Labbadia's men enjoying a good spell. While scoring two goals wasn't typical, it certainly was for Hamburg to throw such a lead away. What happened next resembled the quality and fight that has been noticeable by its absence at HSV this season. Lasogga smashed in a sensational volley and then celebrated with the confidence of a man who had scored 20 in the campaign. In truth, he's only managed three, but that mattered little. Once Paul Verhaegh drilled a half-volley wide, the buoyant home crowd knew three points were headed their way. Hamburg was undoubtedly the greatest winners on matchday 30, leaping into 16th spot in the table.

Stuttgart 2-2 Freiburg

A draw is a result that no one wants in the relegation battle. Stuttgart put in its best performance perhaps all season against fellow-strugglers Freiburg, but only for the first 58 minutes. After that, Freiburg was the only team in charge and Petersen's late equalizer was inevitable. Daniel Ginczek must be sick of scoring but not winning. He scored the opener after Martin Harnik's cross was deflected into his path in the box. Then Harnik turned goalscorer, converting first-time at the near post after superb work by Filip Kostic on the left wing.

Harnik's habit of missing clear-cut chances continued and perhaps that should have been the warning. What followed was the reminder of why Stuttgart is in a relegation battle. Adam Hlousek foolishly left out an arm to fell Jonathan Schmid, Nils Petersen hammered home from the spot and then Hlousek picked up his second yellow to leave Stuttgart only one goal up but a man down with just over 20 minutes to play. It proved costly. Confidence sapped away and Freiburg seized on the momentum swing. Stuttgart drops another two points, while Freiburg tick over to 30.

Dortmund 2-0 Frankfurt

Everyone wants to talk about Jürgen Klopp's next job and the rumors that Ilkay Gündogan has signed with Manchester United, but what seems to have been swept under the carpet is that Dortmund can still sneak into a Europa League qualifying spot. After 24 muted minutes against Frankfurt, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang cooly chipped home a penalty after Sonny Kittel's errant arm connected with Marcel Schmelzer's cross. The attacker from Gabon soon flew down the right wing, crossed low for Shinji Kagawa and the Japanese international converted. That flurry of activity decided the game. Frankfurt improved in the second half and Dortmund had chances, but the score didn't change. With both Schalke and Augsburg losing, Dortmund's Europa League dream is just three points away.

Hannover still winless, Cologne still drawing

Michael Frontzeck did not enjoy his return to the Hannover dugout. When Anthony Modeste scored after a minute from an offside position, it was as if Hannover's season had been personified in one moment. The same could be said for the equaliser - Lars Stindl tucked home a penalty after Tobias Strobl was late on Manuel Schmiedebach in the area. Strobl nearly made up for it, but his header span off the inside of Ron-Robert Zieler's goal and just wide of Modeste's outstretched foot. Hannover pushed, with Stindl coming closest, but it counted for nothing when Adam Szalai hung up a cross for substitute Sven Schipplock to nod in at the back post seven minutes from time. Hannover has now gone 14 games without a win and has just one more point than Hamburg.

You can always rely on Cologne for a good draw. Normally it's 0-0, but against Leverkusen, a 1-1 draw was enough for Peter Stöger's team to stretch its unbeaten home run to eight. Penalties have not delivered the same return as free kicks for Hakan Calhanoglu this season and that didn't change in the derby. Stefan Kiessling took a leap, but Timo Horn took an even greater one to deny Calhanoglu four minutes before the interval. Julian Brandt came off the bench to finish off a great team goal around the hour mark, and it looked to be enough as both Marcel Risse and Anthony Ujah missed chances for the home side. But Bard Finne came off the bench to equalize inside the final 10 minutes. Remarkably, it was the first goal Leverkusen has conceded in open play since Marwin Hitz's goal for Augsburg on February 21.
