Stevens for Stuttgart

Dutchman Huub Stevens has been named as the next head coach at Bundesliga club, VfB Stuttgart. Stevens will start in the role immediately after the resignation of Armin Veh on Monday.

Football journeyman Huub Stevens is set to take on the role of head coach at Bundesliga club, VfB Stuttgart. He replaces Armin Veh who quit his post after a series of bad results.

The 60-year-old Stevens, who last officially worked with Greek club PAOK, will already run training on Tuesday afternoon in Stuttgart. He now has the unenviable task of lifting the southern German team off the bottom of the table.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge," said Stevens on Tuesday at his first press conference.

Stevens has already worked at Stuttgart, after he took over temporarily last season for sacked coach Thomas Schneider, and helped the team avoid relegation.

The rescuer returns?

"I always said I never enjoyed such good teamwork, as when I was with the coaching team here at Stuttgart," Stevens said. "I'm looking forward to working with the team."

The Dutchman has had several longer stints with Bundesliga clubs, including Hamburg, Hertha Berlin and Cologne, and is best known for his time working at Schalke. With the Royal Blues he won the forerunner to the Europa League, the UEFA Cup in 1997, as well as two German Cup finals.

Club president Bernd Wahler said that Stevens has a contract until the end of the season.

"I'm happy that with Huub Stevens we have a coach that knows the team and the club and knows the job that needs to be done," Wahler said.
