October 27, 2016Kerber got off to a bit of a slow start but surprised nobody by beating the seventh-ranked Keys - who has never beaten the world No. 1 on the hard court - 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday. Having won all three of her matches in Singapore,Kerber finishes top of the Red Group and now moves on to Saturday's semifinals.
Kerber, 28, had gone into the match already assured of a place in the semis after Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia beat Rumania's Simona Halep 6-3 7-6(5). The native of the northern German town of Kiel will face Agnieska Radwanska of Poland in the semifinals.
"I am very happy to have won my third match as well," Kerber said in a post-match interview with German public broadcaster ARD. "The first step has been taken, now I am looking forward to Saturday."
Kerber, who dethroned Serena Williams as the World No. 1 after winning last month's US Open, had taken part in the WTA Finals on three previous occasions, but until this year had never made it beyond the group stage.
