Low Fares Boost Frankfurt Airport Passenger Numbers

Lower fares attracted nine percent more passengers to the Frankfurt International Airport in February, according to a statement released by the airport's owner, Fraport AG. The passenger count at Frankfurt's airport, Europe's second largest after Heathrow, rose to 3.57 million, setting a record for February. "Even without the extra day in the 2004 leap year, the upward growth would have resulted in a record performance for the month," said Fraport in the statement. Airports are benefiting from passengers who are traveling with full-service airlines, which have begun offering low fares to compete with the low-cost carriers. Lufthansa, the largest carrier at the Frankfurt Airport, said passenger numbers had increased 8.9 percent in February over the year before.
