Matchday 16 in pictures
League leaders Bayern Munich comfortably beat Freiburg at home, while Dortmund were denied a win after Naldo's late equaliser. Hannover and Stuttgart picked up big wins, and Frankfurt and Hertha played out a thriller.
Gladbach roll over Werder
Werder were second best all night in Mönchengladbach as Max Kruse inspired the home side to a 4-1 win. The result leaves Gladbach in the top three, while Werder Bremen are left propping up the table for the fifth time this season. Kruse scored the first from the spot as Lucien Favre's side stay on track for Champions League qualification.
Famous draw in Frankfurt
Alex Meier notched his 11th and 12th goals of the season in stoppage time to complete a thrilling 4-4 game in Frankfurt. Hertha BSC had taken a 3-0 lead in the first half, but the home side never let up and were rewarded when their lethal goalscorer headed and poked home in stoppage time.
Dortmund miss chance to win
Despite a fantastic start and a lead, Borussia Dortmund were dragged back by Kevin de Bruyne and Wolfsburg. Ciro Immobile went on a second-half mission to win the game for Jürgen Klopp's side and the Italian got his goal too. Sadly for the home team, Naldo was left unmarked from a corner late on and the Brazilian made no mistake. A draw for BVB, but plenty of positives according to Klopp.
Kiessling decides game, again
Both sides had chances and both goalkeepers performed exceptionally well but in the end Stefan Kiessling's tap-in after a neat move was the difference for Leverkusen in their away game against Hoffenheim. This time, the goal definitely went in between the posts.
Paderborn denied
Schalke move to within one point of the top four after coming back from a goal down away against Paderborn. The hosts took the lead and were the better side in the early stages, but in the end Schalke took their chances and the three points.
10-men Stuttgart win in Hamburg
Large spells of the Hamburg vs. Stuttgart game were forgettable, but when Georg Niedermeier got himself sent off - perhaps harshly - early in the second half it looked like Hamburg would come back and cancel out Florian Klein's first-half goal. Van der Vaart hit the bar but more concrete chances failed to appear as Stuttgart moved out of the relegation zone with their win.
Bürki denies Bayern heavier win
Freiburg spent most of the 90 minutes sitting deep, but against the mighty Bayern even that tactic did not work. A lovely team goal was finished off by Arjen Robben and Thomas Müller's brave effort just after the break decided the encounter. Freiburg should not berate themselves. There's no shame losing to Bayern...
Hannover too strong for Augsburg
On a worse for wear surface, Hannover picked up a win that was never in doubt against Augsburg. Straight from the start, Tayfun Korkut's side showed who was at home and scored goals at the right time too: 1-0 midway through the first half thanks to Sane; and 2-0 from Joselu at the start of the second. Hannover are back in the top half of the table.
No Carnival in Cologne
Cologne and Mainz are in similar form at the moment, but neither could take the upper hand in a game that finished 0-0. A disappointing first half was followed by a second that only evolved in the last 20 minutes when Cologne had chances and Okazaki hit the bar for Mainz.
