Media organizations and human rights groups are calling on governments around the world to do more to support press freedom and protect the lives of journalists. Speaking on the eve of World Press Freedom Day on Saturday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon described "a free, secure and independant media" as "one of the foundations of peace and democracy". Press freedom was also the subject of a conference held this past week in Berlin. Hosted by Deutsche Welle, the conference focused on the freedom of the press in China.
