New faces for Germany as Euro 2024 preparations begin
After crashing out of consecutive World Cup's at the group stage, Hansi Flick has brought an array of youthful players into the side. DW takes a look at what the new faces could offer the team.
Marius Wolf
Although Wolf is 27, the versatile midfielder has become a mainstay of Borussia Dortmund's title-chasing side and his form has earned him a deserved call-up. Able to be deployed at center-back or on either wing, Flick may use Wolf to plug the problem area on the right wing. With only a solitary U20 cap in 2015, pulling on a Germany kit will be a big moment for Wolf.
Kevin Schade
An exciting prospect in attack, Schade joined Premier League side Brentford from SC Freiburg on loan in January, with an obligation to buy, for a record fee for the London club of €25million (£22m; $26.5m). The 21-year-old can be deployed on either wing, with his pace making him a constant threat on the counter. Berisha scored four goals in five matches for Germany's U21s.
Felix Nmecha
The Wolfsburg midfielder's breakout season continues with his nomination to the national team. At 22, Nmecha finally received his chance this season, playing in 20 of Wolfsburg's 24 games in the Bundesliga. Maybe he can also do what his goal scoring brother Lukas could not: establish himself as a German international.
Mergim Berisha
Berisha shot into the headlines after his double for Augsburg against Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich even though his side fell to 5-3 loss. Since joining on loan from Fenerbahce in August, Berisha has scored eight goals and picked up four assists in 18 appearances. However, the 24-year-old centre-forward has netted just once in 13 Germany U21 appearances.
Josha Vagnoman
Like Wolf, Vagnoman is likely to receive a trial on the right side of Germany's defense. A Hamburg academy product, the 22-year-old has spent most of his professional career trying to get HSV back in the Bundesliga before moving to Stuttgart before the season. He made 12 appearances for Germany's U21 team, four of which came during the side's triumphant Euro U21 championship in 2021.
