In the US, conservative candidate Newt Gingrich has won the South Carolina primary ahead of favourite Mitt Romney. The vote is not decisive in the race to decide which Republican candidate will face President Barack Obama in November's election. But it sets up Gingrich as a serious challenger to Romney.
