Portugal has a rich history of exploring once uncharted seas and lands, such as Brazil and Africa. But that history also has a dark side with colonialism and slave trade. In Lisbon, two separate public projects — a slavery memorial and a museum celebrating Portuguese exploration — have become lightning rods for debate about the country's colonial past.
