Currently some two billion people around the world have no access to electricity. Meeting their energy needs and helping developing countries escape poverty without further contributing to global warming is one of the greatest challenges the international community faces and is also one of the aims of the UN's Millennium Development Goals.
Renewable technologies like wind and solar power along with biomass fuels are just some ways of bringing clean, safe energy to billions of poor people around the world.
And many developing countries and rapidly growing economies like China have set themselves renewable energy targets so that their industries can continue to grow without increasing their own pollution rates.
