Borussia Dortmund pay for poor start

Despite the return of captain Mats Hummels to the starting line-up, Borussia Dortmund suffered a 2-1 defeat in the Ruhr derby against Schalke 04. Joel Matip was given a remarkable amount of time and space and the Cameroonian defender made no mistake, heading Schalke into an early lead from a corner.

Things went from bad to worse for Jürgen Klopp's men as Adrian Ramos, one of three strikers on the field, sent a hurried clearance straight back into the box - and Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting gobbled up the chance to double Schalke's lead.

It only took a matter of moments for Dortmund to strike back though. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sent a fine side-footed finish into the back of the net after Ramos made amends with a strong run and cross on the right wing.

Spurred on by what appeared to be an angered Jürgen Klopp, Dortmund came out in the second half searching for an equalizer. Ciro Immobile forced a good save by Ralf Fährmann, before Schalke nearly struck their third - the returning Kevin Prince Boateng fired wide from the edge of the area.

Shinji Kagawa came on shortly before the hour mark, but struggled to sprinkle his magic as Dortmund pushed for a goal. Ramos was clipped by Matip on the edge of the area but no penalty was given.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar nearly made it three for Schalke on a stoppage-time counterattack, but it mattered little. Dortmund ran out of time as Jens Keller's team were the derby day victors, overturning a disappointing record at home to their bitter rivals in recent seasons.

Bayern comfortable in Cologne

Bayern were rarely troubled in their 2-0 win in Cologne. Having bagged a brace against SC Paderborn, Mario Götze continued his fine scoring form by putting Bayern ahead in the early stages. The attacking-midfielder sweeped home from inside the box after Robert Lewandowski missed the ball at the near post.

A brilliant home support of close to 50,000 urged the home side on and Bayern's goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had to make a brilliant double save from point-blank range to deny Adam Matuschyk and then Anthony Ujah.

Were it not for Germany U21 goalkeeper Timo Horn, Cologne would have conceded more than just the two goals. The second, and ultimately decisive, goal did come though - Daniel Halfar converted Götze's low cross into his own net after Cologne's defense had a lapse in concentration.

Strong start is enough for Gladbach

After being brought down to earth in Munich, Paderborn's Bundesliga humbling continued on the weekend as Lucien Favre's Borussia Mönchengladbach sneaked a 2-1 victory against the newly-promoted club.

Patrick Herrmann, making his first start of the league season, finished off a lovely counterattacking move before Raffael bundled home from close range after his header had been saved to give the visitors a two-goal lead inside the opening quarter of an hour.

Gladbach huffed and puffed, but both Lukas Kruse, Paderborn's keeper, and the woodwork denied them. Eventually the home side made them pay as Jens Wemmer converted smartly at the near post to reduce the deficit to just one. It was just a little too late for Paderborn though, as Gladbach survived a nervous finish to pick up the win.

Matchwinners: Schwaab, Bürki and Olic

Daniel Schwaab proved the match winner for Armin Veh's Stuttgart, as they picked up their first win of the season, beating Hanover 1-0 at home. Veh dropped first-choice goalkeeper Sven Ulreich for Thorsten Kirschbaum and the hosts proved deserved winners against a subdued Hanover side.

Roman Bürki was the hero for Freiburg in their 0-0 draw with Leverkusen. Emir Spahic was sent off after 28 minutes for the visitors after picking up two swift yellow cards - but Roger Schmidt's side still had the better chances.

Freiburg, without Vladimir Darida and Admir Mehmedi, struggled but picked up a point thanks to their goalkeeper's performance. Bürki denied Heung-Min Son and Karim Bellarabi, pushing the latter's 73rd minute strike onto the bar.

With three minutes left in the game, Son left Bürki standing, but the crossbar kept the South Korean's effort out. Freiburg had Pavel Krmas sent off, but even with a level playing field, Christian Streich's side couldn't produce an equalizer.

In Saturday's late game, Wolfsburg earned a deserved 2-1 victory against Werder Bremen thanks to Ivica Olic's deft header. Werder youngster Marnon Busch's low drive cancelled out Ricardo Rodriguez's third goal of the season, but Werder were left second best and are still without a win this season.
