Schalke 04 grabbed a late win over Hertha Berlin on Saturday to pull even with Bundesliga leader Bayern Munich. A close-range goal from Heiko Westermann in the 87th minute gave Schalke the 1-0 win they needed to match Bayern's 64 points on the table.

Bayern had to settle for a 1-1 tie with Borussia Moenchengladbach, but remain top of the table on goal difference.

Miroslav Klose was called off the substitute's bench and scored for Bayern 73 minutes in. His goal was answered by a header from Moenchengladbach's Philipp Lahm.

Bremen third

A penalty by Torsten Frings in stoppage time against Cologne earned Werder Bremen third spot on the league table ahead of Leverkusen, on goal difference.

Bayer Leverkusen managed a 3-0 victory over second-to-last-place Hanover, with Stefan Kiessling scoring at the 26th minute and again on a penalty kick late in the 88th. Midfielder Burak Kaplan scored midway through the second half.

In other games on Saturday, Borussia Dortmund's Lucas Barrios scored a hat trick to secure a 3-2 victory over Nuremberg. Barrios headed Dortmund in front in the 27th minute only for Mike Frantz to level three minutes later, but Barrios struck again just after the hour and again in the 77th minute, before Christian Eigler gave the visitors late hope four minutes from the end.

In a local derby, Mainz and Eintracht Frankfurt drew 3-3, retaining their middle-of-the-table slots at 10 and 9, respectively. Stuttgart beat Bochum 2-0 on Friday.

On Sunday, Hoffenheim crushed Hamburg 5-1 at home, while Wolfsburg fell 1-0 at Freiburg.
