Sport's biggest social media stars
If he wasn't famous enough already, Cristiano Ronaldo has now reached 100 million Facebook fans, closing in on musician Shakira who has 105 million. DW takes a closer look at the most-loved sports stars in social media.
The high-flyer
Cristiano Ronaldo is the number one social media sportsman in the world. The Portuguese superstar plays for Real Madrid and has over 100 million fans on Facebook. Ronaldo's numbers for Real Madrid are quite remarkable - he has scored 269 goals in 257 games - but his 30 million followers on Twitter are equally impressive.
Twitter is not Messi's thing
Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi didn't just get beaten at last year's FIFA Ballon d'Or by Ronaldo, he's also trailing him online too. Especially when it comes to Twitter, where he has only just over 2 million followers. But, his 74 million Facebook friends are still pretty impressive.
Big potential: Neymar
Even if his World Cup campaign wasn't the greatest, the 22-year-old Brazilian football star Neymar has now got 48 million Facebook fans. On Twitter he is the fourth most popular sportsperson.
Kaka is a hit online
His best football years seem to be behind him, but Kaka (pictured with his wife Caroline) is still very popular on social media. 21 million fans follow the 32-year-old on Twitter making him the second most popular sportsman there. His Facebook community is also substantial, where he has registered 39 million likes.
Social swish for King James
NBA superstar LeBron James is the only sportsperson to break into football's dominance of social media. The basketball icon has 15 and a half million followers on Twitter - the third most of all athletes. His 22 million fans on Facebook are also not to be sniffed at.
Özil online: a force to be reckoned with
First out of form, and now injured. World Cup winner Mesut Özil might be enduring a tough time at the moment, but the Arsenal midfielder can take heart from his impressive online following. With 26 and a half million fans on Facebook and over 8 million followers on Twitter, Özil is the most popular German sportsperson on social media.
Bolt in slow lane online
The fastest man in the world doesn't quite have the same pace online as on the track. Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt has a modest 16 million fans on Facebook, and only 3 and a half million followers on Twitter.
Beckham still popular
He may have hung up his boots a while ago, but former England captain David Beckham retains a popular presence when it comes to social media. The ex Manchester United and Real Madrid man has 50 million fans on Facebook.
