The Bayern Munich-Borussia Dortmund German Cup Rivalry
Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund will meet in their third German Cup final in five years, but their cup rivalry extends far beyond the past decade. Here is a look at the Cup history between the two powerhouses.
Bundesliga newcomers defeat the Champions
In 1966, Borussia Dortmund had just lifted their first German Cup while Bayern Munich were in the middle of their first top-flight season. The Bavarian underdogs shocked the defending champions in qualification, Rainer Ohlhauser (pictured) scoring in the first minute of the game. Bayern went on to lift their first German Cup and a half-century-long footballing rivalry began.
Bayern get back on course
When the two clubs met in the Cup again in 1981, Bayern were rising back to the top in Europe while Dortmund were rebounding from relegation. Bayern's class was on full display, scoring two goals in each half - one from Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (pictured) - to blow pass Dortmund 4-0. Bayern went on to win the Cup for a sixth time.
Dortmund triumph on penalties
Dortmund got the better of Bayern in 1992, knocking the Bavarian club out in the second round. Bruno Labbadia equalized before Mazinho (pictured) gave Bayern a first-half lead, but Stephane Chapuisat levelled late for Dortmund to force extra time. Mazinho missed his penalty to give Dortmund the win, but Ulm knocked them out in the next round.
Toni strikes in extra time
The 2008 final was the first in which Bayern and Dortmund went head-to-head. Luca Toni (left) was the hero, opening the scoring early and netting the eventual winner in extra time. The loss for Dortmund prompted the sacking of Thomas Doll and led to Jürgen Klopp taking over at the Westfalenstadion.
Dominant Dortmund seal domestic double
Dortmund are the only team to challenge Bayern's dominance in the past decade, and 2012 was their zenith. Dortmund bombarded Bayern with Goals, including a Robert Lewandowski (left) hat-trick, to win the final 5-2. The title completed Dortmund's first domestic double.
Robben restores Bayern's ruthlessness
Trying to rebound after consecutive trophyless seasons, Bayern bested their closest rivals in the 2013 quarter-finals. Arjen Robben, who was struggling for fitness the entire year, scored the game's only goal in the first half. Bayern went on to win the first treble in the club's history.
Robben, Müller break deadlock
The league was lost but Dortmund still had a shot at a trophy when they faced Bayern in the 2014 final. A Mats Hummels header that may have crossed the line was ruled out and the contest went to extra time. Arjen Robben and Thomas Müller helped secure Bayern's 10th domestic double.
Another final slips away from Bayern
The Bundesliga eluded Jürgen Klopp in his final season with Dortmund and he fell at the last hurdle in the Cup. In their semi-final, Dortmund and Bayern were tied at 1-1 after extra time before Philipp Lahm (pictured) and Xabi Alonso slipped in the shootout. Dortmund advanced to the final where they lost to Wolfsburg.
