Israel says it is giving serious consideration to an Egyptian proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says he will support the initiative, which was proposed by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak following mediation by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Egypt also said it has invited Israeli and Palestinian leaders for urgent meetings. News of the initiative came as the UN was also debating a ceasefire; those discussions are set to resume today.
