The stars who've popularized sweatpants
Although they were originally designed for athletes, sweatpants are now popular with everyone from Madonna to Barack Obama. Here are some of the famous figures who have helped make this humble clothing item a hit.
Run DMC: Tracksuit godfathers
No one made 1980s tracksuits look cooler than this legendary hip-hop combo. The rappers popularized loose-fitting pants, bringing the street-style look into the spotlight. Later, the group worked with sportswear manufacturer Adidas to create their own jogging pants.
Kanye, aka. Yeezy
Kanye may consider Run DMC among his musical role models, but the group also influenced his fashion sense. He is often seen wearing the typical three-stripe track pants, including those from his successful "Yeezy" collection. Since 2015, Ye has been designing sneakers, jackets and jogging pants for German sporting goods manufacturers.
Madonna dances in tracksuits
The "Queen of Pop" is known for her affinity for unusual fashion in both everyday life and on stage. Not surprisingly, she has also appeared in aerobics outfits and tracksuits that could have been borrowed from the likes of Run DMC.
The Backstreet Boys' backstreet style
They are the epitome of the 90s boy band, and unsurprisingly, they love sweatpants! The Backstreet Boys brought the style of their namesake into the mainstream with the help of tracksuit pants. Not only were they some of the biggest teenage heartthrobs of their time, but they were also among the most famous sweatshirt wearers and trendsetters.
*NSYNC in baggy silk
*NSYNC is yet another boy band that influenced both the music and fashion of their heyday. This popular group revolving around Justin Timberlake frequently sported jogging and training pants, especially those made of baggy silk. They were all the rage with teens in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Eminem raps in sweatpants
Although he doesn't have a lot in common with boy band members, "Slim Shady" also loves sweatpants. In the late 1990s, the rapper often wore gold chains and light gray slacks on stage. Like many other hip-hop stars, he also had his own clothing line and sold hoodies, shirts and jogging pants.
Barack Obama gets sporty
Even the former US president unabashedly donned sportswear during his tenure. Obama did not shy away from showing himself in tracksuit trousers in public — perhaps it was an expression of the easygoing manner he became known for during his presidency.
Sweatpants on the catwalk
Since 2008, sweatpants have been frequently appearing on catwalks in fashion capitals around the world. At New York Fashion Week, designer Alexander Wang, among others, dressed his models in baggy grey sweatpants from his collection.
Karl Lagerfeld loses control
"Anyone who wears sweatpants has lost control of their life." This 2012 statement by the controversial designer is one he would probably not dare to repeat today. Lagerfeld finally surrendered to the trend and designed sweatpants for the fall//winter collection in 2014/15.
