The United Nations Security Council has called emergency consultations on the situation in Burma and will meet later tonight. The United States and the European Union want the U.N. to consider sanctions against the military regime. The EU plans to review its own sanctions tomorrow. International leaders have condemned the violence in Burma, including German chancellor Angela Merkel.
