Tracking the Climate
November 23, 2015First stop: Greenland. The world's largest island is still covered by a thick crust of ice kilometers thick. But temperatures this spring rose to as much as 16 degrees higher than normal.
Bernice and the researchers row out to an ice spit that has melted more in the past decade than in the previous hundred years. So how are the Greenlanders dealing with this situation? From Greenland, we continue into the tropical rainforests of the Amazon region. Bernice goes to a research station that is hard to get to because it is high in the treetops. The gauges there show that the warming of the surrounding oceans is causing a gradual drying out of the rainforest area, which is increasingly threatening biodiversity.
Alsace: the picking season for red wine grapes there has shifted 30 days forward in just 30 years. Faced with this threat to their livelihoods, winemakers are experimenting with heat-resistant varieties of grapes from the Mediterranean. From Greenland to South Africa, from the Amazon to the Himalayas and across Europe, Bernice Notenboom makes us shockingly aware of how noticeable the effects of climate change around the world already are.
