Voters in Afghanistan go to the polls to elect a president amid tight security

The people of Afghanistan are voting today in presidential and provincial elections -- the second time they've done so since the overthrow in 2001 of the Taliban. It has threatened to disrupt the elections, and early reports from the south, where it remains strong, indicate that turnout there has been low. In Kabul, people queued at polling stations and officials said the voting had gotten off to a relatively peaceful start.
