What's on at Europe's Museums

From Sept. 12 through December, the highly acclaimed musical composer Andrew Lloyd Webber is displaying his private art collection at London's Royal Academy. The 55-year-old, who scored international success with musicals such as "Cats" and "Evita" has been collecting art for the past 40 years, and has a stunning collection, including many 19th century English pre-Raphaelite canvases, 15 of which were painted by the co-founder of the pre-Raphaelites, Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Also on display is Picasso's priceless Angel Fernandez de Soto and a portrait by Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood. The Stone's unfinished, triptych of diners at a popular London restaurant, which was commissioned by Andrew Lloyd Webber three years ago is the only paining on view to be done by a living artist.

Vuillard Retrospective

Having toured Washington, Montreal and London, the comprehensive exhibition of French painter Edouard Vuillard's work is set to open at the Grand Palais in Paris on Sept. 25. The exhibition will feature 230 pieces from private and public collections the world over, ranging from the time of the artist's early academic studies to his work with the avant-garde Nabi group (prophets of new art) at the end of the 19th century. The exhibition includes prints, previously unseen drawings, photographs, portraits and landscapes as well as the intimate interiors and decorative work for the theater for which Vuillard became so well known.

The Jean Cocteau Show

Jean Cocteau was a painter, sculptor, photographer, filmmaker and writer. In short he was a "Touche-à-tout," an artist who dabbled in everything. From Sept. 25 to Jan.5, the Pompidou Center in Paris is staging one of the largest retrospectives to be dedicated to the artist, who was a central figure of 20th century Parisian cultural life. The exhibition, which spans the extensive breadth of his artistic voyage features a massive 900 pieces of work, including hundreds of drawings and photographs, paintings, installations, manuscripts and films. Cocteau began his painting career under the influence of Dadaism and surrealism before becoming an inspiration for neo-classicism.

Following in the footsteps of Klimt at Lake Attersee

Beautiful landscapes with the peace and calm of a summer evening or gathering storms over the still waters of Lake Attersee are some of the images captured on canvas by the Vienna-born art-nouveau painter Gustav Klimt (1862-1918). Klimt had a weakness for the picturesque setting of Lake Attersee, which lies serenely in the foothills of the Alps, and he spent many summers there recording the color and composition of what he saw. Sept. 20 marked the opening of a trail path which leads from Litzlberg along the shores of the lake, passing 24 spots marked by steles, which allow trailfinders to recapture the very same views once absorbed by the Austrian painter himself.
