Who could be the next big stars in men’s tennis?
Roger Federer's retirement from tennis leaves just two of the big three, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic on the ATP Tour. They won't be around forever either. So who could become the next big stars in men’s tennis?
Carlos Alcaraz (Spain, 19)
Having won the US Open last weekend, Carlos Alcaraz, whose first Grand Slam victory made him the youngest player in history to top the ATP singles rankings, is top of the list. Barring injury, the Spaniard, whose style is that of a warrior on the court, should have a lot of years ahead of him in which he could be a dominant force.
Casper Ruud (Norway, 23)
Casper Ruud, who lost last Sunday's final to Alcaraz, has yet to win a Grand Slam. However, the US Open did mark his second appearance in a major final. If he continues to develop his game, the Norwegian has everything it takes to become one of the stars of the next generation. With nine ATP Tour singles titles to his name, it seems just a matter of time before he lands that first Slam.
Jannik Sinner (Italy, 21)
The Italian, who has won six ATP Tour singles titles, is already being compared by some to Novak Djokovic. However, he has yet to reach a Grand Slam final, having reached three quarterfinals in 2022. As he continues to develop his game, bigger things are expected from him in 2023.
Lorenzo Musetti (Italy, 20)
Another Italian, Lorenzo Musetti won the ATP title in Hamburg in 2022 when he defeated Carlos Alcaraz, in a test of two of the sport’s future stars. While Alcaraz' style has been likened to that of Rafael Nadal, Musetti's finesse brings Roger Federer to mind. We may be able to look forward to an intense rivalry between Musetti and Alcaraz as both plot a path to greatness.
Sebastian Baez (Argentina, 21)
Sebastian Baez captured his first career ATP singles title in 2022, beating Frances Tiafoe in Portugal. He is fresh on the Tour having made his Grand Slam debut in Paris this year. The Argentine reached the semifinal of the ATP Next Generation Finals in 2021, showing he belongs among the posible stars of the future.
