Wolfsburg celebrate their German Cup win
What a way to round off the season: VfL Wolfsburg is now Germany's second-force and has ended the season with a trophy. On Sunday, players and management celebrated with fans in the city, which is home to Volkswagen.
Arrival in Wolfsburg
At 12.40pm on Sunday, Wolfsburg captain Diego Benaglio presented the German Cup trophy to waiting Wolfsburg fans at the city's main train station. The Swiss keeper was also part of Wolfsburg's championship win in 2009 and said his team-mates 'were rewarded for an outstanding season' this time round.
Jubilation
"Quietly go crazy!" recommended Klaus Allofs. On Saturday night in Berlin there had been "howls of joy" from the players as Wolfsburg celebrated their triumph. "That's the conclusion to this season: that this team is a team," said the team's coach Dieter Hecking. "And the Cup victory is the icing on the cake."
The anti-hero
Serious, yet down-to-earth and likable - that's Dieter Hecking. Traits that make him a little different to other German coaches. "Having reached the age of 50 now, I wanted to win my first title," he said. "It worked out."
On the shirt, and in their hearts
Wolfsburg wore special shirts in their Cup win over Dortmund - it featured a green heart with No.19 in memory of Junior Malanda who was killed in a car accident earlier in the year. "Junior is always with us," said De Bruyne post-match. Hecking added: "If we run out of gas, our 12th man above will help us."
The equalizer
On Saturday it was Luis Gustavo who brough Wolfsburg back into the game: the Brazilian scored the rebound to Naldo's free-kick on 22 minutes. It could be argued that it was a mistake from Langerak, but Gustavo made no mistake. From then on, Wolfsburg dominated ...
Golden boy
Scoring goals or setting them up: this man is always dangerous in attack. At just 23, De Bruyne has become Wolfsburg's most highly-coveted player with his speed, mobility and great technique. Already, the big clubs are interested. Presumably, Wolfsburg will keep him for one more year.
The party animal!
The fans and media's opinions are unanimous. Bas Dost, who scored Wolfsburg's third goal in Wolfsburg, is the club's best party-goer. The Dutchman has scored 20 goals this season so he's used to celebrating. "We've earned this," the striker said after the match.
