Word of the Week: Fanmeile
June 28, 2016Got your face paint, jersey, a huge flag, and tons of friends? Then your ready to watch a Euro Cup soccer game, like these fans, who cheered Germany into the quarter-final of this year's European Championship.
In German cities, soccer enthusiasts gather on open air Fanmeilen - literally, "fan miles" - to follow big games. Fanmeilen first emerged in Germany during the 2006 World Cup, which was hosted here.
That same year, Fanmeile was selected as the German Word of the Year. The longest Fanmeile was formed in Berlin, where 900,000 fans descended with flags and banners to watch the match on outdoor screens. On that day in 2006, fans had plenty to cheer about: Germany beat Agentina 4:2, but later lost to Italy in the semi-finals.
Let's hope, a decade later, the four-time World Champs wrap up the Euro 2016 with greater success.
