Electricity isn't always accessible or affordable in Rio de Janeiro's favelas. Often, electricity is siphoned off illegally — which is dangerous and has led to fires in the past. A newly installed solar power plant gives some of Rio's poorest citizens access to clean energy. The pilot project is also generating much-needed jobs.
