In 1999 the international organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its "pioneering humanitarian work on several continents".

For his indepth feature, author Thomas Kruchem reports from refugee tents on the Greek island of Samos, meets a nusre in a shantytown in South Africa, talks to some of those who helped to set up the organization and finds out about current challenges the organisation is facing.
