乍得方面传出消息称，一名"基地"组织的重要领导人物在马里北部被击毙。乍得总统代比(Idriss Deby)宣称，该国军队击毙了扎伊德（Abdelhamid Abu Zeid）以及另外一名"基地"组织领导人。正在马里打击伊斯兰武装力量的法国目前为止没有证实扎伊德已经身亡。与"基地"组织有联系的马里国民却表示，基地组织的支持者已经证实了扎伊德身亡的消息。法国媒体报道称，目前有关方面正试图通过一项基因测试彻底澄清此事。有指责称扎伊德要为多年来数起西方国家公民被绑架的案件负责。同时也有人怀疑，扎伊德亲手杀害了2009年被绑架的英国人戴尔（Edwin Dyer）以及2010年被绑架的法国人杰曼诺(Michel Germaneau)。
