Vietnamese tourists walk past a memorial stone, 05 May 1999, in a forest on the outskirts of Dien Bien Phu city in Lai Chau province, northwest Vietnam, 16 km from the Laos border. Within these woods is the area where the Vietnamese hero General Vo Nguyen Giap trained and protected the Viet Minh forces which overran the beleaguered French garrison after a 57-day siege. Vietnam celebrates 07 May the 45th anniversary of this famous victory, which effectively forced the French government to abandon its attempt to re-establish colonial control of Indochina.
