乍得方面傳出消息稱，一名"基地"組織的重要領導人物在馬裡北部被擊斃。乍得總統代比(Idriss Deby)宣稱，該國軍隊擊斃了扎伊德（Abdelhamid Abu Zeid）以及另外一名"基地"組織領導人。正在馬裡打擊伊斯蘭武裝力量的法國目前為止沒有證實扎伊德已經身亡。與"基地"組織有聯繫的馬裡國民卻表示，基地組織的支持者已經證實了扎伊德身亡的消息。法國媒體報導稱，目前有關方面正試圖通過一項基因測試徹底澄清此事。有指責稱扎伊德要為多年來數起西方國家公民被綁架的案件負責。同時也有人懷疑，扎伊德親手殺害了2009年被綁架的英國人戴爾（Edwin Dyer）以及2010年被綁架的法國人傑曼諾(Michel Germaneau)。
