Wie beide Unternehmen am 28.1.1999 in Göteborg und Dearborn bei Detroit mitteilten, kauft Ford für 6,5 Milliarden Dollar (elf Mrd DM/5,6 Mrd Euro) die gesamte Pkw-Sparte von Volvo. Der ausgehandelte Preis lag deutlich über den bisher Erwartungen von Branchenbeoachtern. Damit gewann der nach der Produktionszahl zweitgrößte Autohersteller der Welt nach General Motors den monatelangen Verhandlungspoker um Volvo, bei dem auch Fiat, Volkswagen und General Motors mitgeboten hatten.
